"I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD...": THE NORTH CAROLINA TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM

PACK 254 AT THE N.C. TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM
SPENCER, N.C.- OCT. 13TH, 2012
On Saturday, October 13th, Pack 254 spent the day at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina.  We had an opportunity to ride a real train around the museum grounds, we were able to learn about and ride the turntable at the roundhouse and we were able to walk around real trains and climb on and inside train cars!!  We saw that trains were used for things like delivering the U.S. mail, for transporting troops and they even could be outfitted to be mobile hospitals!  We also had a chance to see men work on repairing trains.  Finally, we were able to see some really old cars including Model T's.

There were 44 of us from Pack 254 which included 13 Scouts.  To end up a great day, we had a picnic lunch.  All in all, it was a great day, great experience and we had great weather.  We hope that you can join us on our next "One Saturday Per Month" event as we travel to the AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia on November 17th.

IT'S UNIFORM NIGHT AT PACK 254

The first uniform night was a great sucess as the members of Pack 254 dressed out in their Class A uniforms.  Some have not had a chance to get Class A's and that's okay.  We had a tie; both the Webelos II and Bear Dens had 100% compliance !!!!!  Congratulations to these two dens!!! Our next "Uniform Night" will be Monday, November 3rd.

PACK 254 CAMPOUT-SEPTEMBER STYLE

Time for a good breakfast after a long night camping

Eighteen (18) members of Pack 254 spent the night of September 28th in tents along the Little Reed Island in the mountains of Virginia along with their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters as Pack 254 held its September "One Saturday Per Month" event.  All total, there were approximately 52 people who braved some rain and cold weather to enjoy some mountain air as we cooked over the campfire, roasted marshmellows, made S'mores, played in a mountain stream, went hiking, (whew) and went on a night time hay(less) ride.  No one will forget the delicious peach cobbler that Ms. Dana prepared in the dutch oven (except for the ones who didn't eat any) and two of the three hay(less) night-time rides came across wildlife!  Word was the water was cold, but the boys (and girls) all had a great time as we ejoyed ourselves in the great outdoors.  Below are some pictures of our weekend.  If you didn't get to go, I hope you will take advantage of our other "One Saturday Per Month" events.

INTRODUCING "UNIFORM NIGHT" FOR 2012/2013

Cub Scout Class A Uniforms
Beginning this Scout year, the leadership of Pack 254 has decided to hold "Uniform Night" one night each month.  This will be a time when the members of Pack 254 will be asked to where their Class A uniform to their Den meetings.  During this time, we will do uniform inspections and prizes will be given to the Den who has the largest percentage of its members in uniform for each "Uniform Night".  We have also decided that on all other meeting nights, members of Pack 254 will be asked to wear their Class B (Pack t-shirt).  In accordance with Boy Scout of America policy, all Cub Scouts must wear their Class A uniforms during Pack functions away from our Scout room unless they are told that we are making an exception to that requirement for a particular event.  If you need assistance in obtaining a Class A or B uniform, please contact me and I will assist you.  I hope that your Scout finds this to be an exciting change to our program at Cub Scout Pack 254.

SUMMER CAMP OUT IN HILLSVILLE, VIRGINIA

Five members of Pack 254 and their families are back at home after a great weekend camping in Hillsville, Virginia on July 20th - 21st.  After arriving on Friday evening, tents were put up and camp was established before we roasted hotdogs over a campfire that was later drenched by a summer time rain.  Even so, the rain didn't dampen our spirits as we were able to not only eat hotdogs that had a taste only acheived over a campfire, but we also made and cooked a peach cobbler in a dutch oven!  The only thing missing was some vanilla ice cream.

The boys also had a chance to spend some major time in a cool mountain creek as they went swimming down at the ole' swimming hole.  In addition to swimming, we did some hiking on mountain trails and we went on a wagon ride.  We had a great time and below are some pictures of the fun we had.  Remember, our next One Saturday a Month will be a swimming party with dates, times and places to be announced soon.  Pleas work on inviting a friend to join you as we get ready to begin another great year at Pack 254.

HONORING OUR FLAG- PACK 254 CELEBRATES FLAG DAY WITH A FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY

For the third time in the last four years, Pack 254 celebrated Flag Day by hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony.  With the help of Troop 254, the Honor Guard from the Rowan County Sheriff's Department and the Sheriff Kevin Auten, Pack 254 retired approximately 30 flags that were torn and stained.  The Salisbury Post was present to report on this solemn ceremony and you can read more about it by clicking HERE.  Below are a couple of pictures from the ceremony.  I want to personally than Sheriff Auten, Lt. St. Clair, Sgt. Owens, Deputy Phillips and Sgt. Price from the Rowan County Sheriff's Department for their help.  I also want to than members of the Pack 254 and Troop 254 from Bethpage United Methodist Church for coming out on their summer vacation and helping.  Finally, thank you to Lt. Cecil L. Whitley, Ret. for his assistance in inspecting our flag and declaring it worthy for retirement.

PACK 254'S SPRING TRIP: WASHINGTON, D.C. 2012!

Members of Pack 254 invaded Washington, D.C. during the weekend of May 18th, 2012 for their Spring Trip!  We stayed at Camp William B. Snyder in Haymarket, Virginia and after eating a great dinner on Friday night (Papa John's Pizza), we got up Saturday morning and made our way into our Nation's Capital City.  When we arrived back at Camp Snyder on Saturday night, several things were apparent...we were all very tired...we were all hungry...most of us were sunburned...and we had all seen or experienced something in Washington, D.C. that someone else in the group had not seen or experienced.  All in all, we were a small group, but we all had a great time and we all saw a lot of history!  I would like to thank the families who took time out of their busy schedules to take their boys with us.  Plans are already being made for our trip in 2013...Where will we go???   Enjoy some of the pictures I took---if you have pictures of your own, please email them to me.

PACK 254'S NIGHT OUT AT THE INTIMIDATOR'S

As part as our "One Saturday a Month" program, Pack 254 went to see the Kannapolis Intimidator's play on April 21st.  We began the evening by tailgating with Chic-Fil-A nuggets, home-made sandwiches, and home-made cookies and ended the night with a spectacular fireworks display courtesy of the Kannapolis Intimidators!  In between we watched a good baseball game and had some fun with the Intimidator's mascot.  Be on the lookout for future opportunites to spend some time with the Cub Scouts of Pack 254--even chances during the Summer!  Enjoy the pictures from the evening...
