"A BRAVE NEW WORLD FOR CUB SCOUT PACK 254 IN 2011/2012"

AS I WRITE THIS, I AM MAKING LAST MINUTE PREPARATIONS FOR SCOUT SUNDAY AND THAT ALWAYS GIVES ME A CHANCE TO REFLECT ON OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS BOTH DURING LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR. I THINK THAT YOU APPRECIATE THE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS IN THESE TIMES TO STRIKE A HEALTHY BALANCE BETWEEN CUB SCOUTS AND ALL THE OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT PULL OUR SONS AND GRANDSONS FROM PLACE TO PLACE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE UPCOMING SPRING SPORTS THAT WILL SOON BEGIN. WHILE I THINK LEARNING TO PARTICPATE IN TEAM SPORTS IS IMPORTANT, PLEASE DON'T FORGET YOUR COMMITTMENT TO CUB SCOUTS IN STRIKING THIS BALANCE.

TODAY IS SCOUT SUNDAY; A TIME FOR US TO CELEBRATE CUB SCOUTS, TO GIVE THE CONGREGATION OF BETHPAGE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH A PICTURE OF WHAT WE ARE UP TO AND A CHANCE TO THANK THAT CONGREGATION FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT. IT IS ALSO THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE SCOUT YEAR AS WE WORK TOWARDS THE SPRING AND SUDDENLY THE END OF SCHOOL; IT WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT! BUT THERE IS A LOT THAT WE STILL HAVE TO DO.

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF EVENTS TO REMEMBER:

FEB 25TH: PACK 254'S ANNUAL PINEWOOD DERBY. TROOP 254 WILL BE HOLDING A HOTDOG SALE IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR DERBY SO BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY OUT FOR A FUN DAY OF COMPETITION.

MARCH 5TH: PACK MEETING

MARCH 10TH: CHARLOTTE CHECKERS HOCKEY GAME

APRIL 21ST: KANNAPOLIS INTIMIDATORS GAME

MAY 18TH-20TH: SPRING TRIP TO WASHINGTON, DC

WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF FUN TO HAVE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. I HOPE YOU WILL TAKE TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN AS MANY ACTIVITIES AS YOU CAN.

PLEASE CHECK IN WITH THIS WEB SITE WEEKLY THIS YEAR TO GET IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT MAY NOT ALWAYS GET TRANSMITTED DURING OUR MEETINGS. IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME.

CUB SCOUT PACK 254'S ANNUAL CANNED FOOD DRIVE CONTEST

Pack 254 is once again hosting it's Annual Canned Food Drive Contest this year and it isn't too early to begin bringing in your canned food. Just like last year, the competition will be between the Dens to collect the most cans per member of the Den and the winning Den will once again be treated to a pizza party; this time it will be at Touchdown Pizza!!! Start bringing in your cans and turn them in to your Den Leaders who will let me know how many your Den collects each night. On November 21st at our Pack Meeting, I will announce the winning Den and I will work with the Den Leader to schedule your party. Ask your family friends, grandparents, neighbors and anyone you think might help us collect as many cans as we can.

All cans will be delivered to Rowan Helping Ministries. Let's make this the best contest/food drive we've ever had!!

CUB SCOUT POPCORN SALE BEGINS AT PACK 254

The 2011 Cub Scout Popcorn Sale begins Oct 3rd here at Pack 254 and continues until Nov 7th when all orders will be due. Every member of Pack 254 will receive their order forms on October 3rd and there is a list of great prizes for selling certain amounts of popcorn. This Sale is one of two fundraisers that Pack 254 participate in during the scout year and helps fund our program and pay for trips. Please contact family, friends and co-workers and let them know that your scout will be asking them to purchase popcorn for this great cause. I found that people I never ask come up to me after the sale wondering why they were never asked...so don't leave anyone out.

KODY BARRINGER, WEBELO SCOUT FROM PACK 254, WINS THE KANNAPOLIS DISTRICT PINEWOOD DERBY FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!!

On Saturday, March 5th, Kody Barringer, who is a Webelo in our Pack, won first place at the Kannapolis District Pinewood Derby. It was a win that wasn't "in the bag" until the final results were announced. Apparently, the organizers were having trouble with the times of the races being posted and so no one knew who one until the results were announced. Kody's mom, Crystal reported that there were some tense moments to the point that Kody thought he had not placed. But in the end, his name was announced last- as the Winner. Congratulations Kody. Kody also won this race in 2010. As winner, he will represent not only our Pack but our District at the Council race later in the year!

PACK 254 CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS

As you should know by now, Pack 254 is truly a "Pack on the Move" and the Christmas Season did not slow us down. We began celebrating the "season" of Christmas with a canned food drive copetition between the Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Dens. After 3 weeks of intense competition, the Wolf Den won for raising the most cans per Wolf scout and they will be having a pizza party on January 3rd at Ci Ci's Pizza!! Congratulations to the Wolf Den but the whole Pack deserves recognition for collecting 297 lbs. of food which was donated to Cooperative Christian Ministries in Concord.

As the season continued after Thanksgiving, Pack 254 was again on the move as they once again designed, decorated and entered a float in the Kannapolis Christmas Parade. Every Den participated in the decoration of the float and they received cheers and applause as they travelled along the parade route on December 11th. Great Job!!!

On December 18th, Pack 254 had the 3rd Annual Cookie Bake at Bethpage UMC. Cub Scouts came early to begin baking cookies that were placed in cookie tins to be handed out when Pack 254 went caroling on December 20th. The cookie bake was a great sucess with Pack 254 baking and decorating what was estimated to be over 30 dozen cookies!! After we finished the baking and decorating, we had a hotdog lunch and then the scouts had an chance to fill up their own cookie "sack" to take home.

Finally, we took our show (and cookies) on the road as over 40 Cub Scouts and their parents visited Miss Nagy, Mr. Robert (aka Santa), Ms. Phipps, Mr. Henderson (Mrs. Henderson was sick), Mr. and Mrs. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Fesperman. We sang great Christmas songs like "Away in a Manger", "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells". We always finished off strong with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". We capped the night off with a trip back to the Scout room where we ate the rest of the cookies and drank hot chocolate. We would like to thank Mr. Lee for driving us.
As you can see, we have been busy. But if you think we are finished, "you ain't seen nothing yet!!!!"

PACK 254 GOES CAMPING IN HILLSVILLE, VIRGINIA!!

On Saturday, October 16th, members of Pack 254, along with their parents and brothers and sisters took a trip to the mountains of Virginia for an overnight camping trip in Hillsville, Virginia. As you can see from the pictures, the boys had a good time hiking, doing scavenger hunts, playing games, picking apples, cooking over the campfire, eating S'mores and just having fun with their families and friends. If you didn't get a chance to go in October, look for another opportunity in the Spring!

PACK 254 CANNED FOOD DRIVE COMPETITION!!

It has become a tradition for Pack 254 to have a canned food drive this time of year and to have a friendly competition between the Dens. Starting Monday, November 8th and for the next two weeks thereafter (November 16th and 22nd), members of Pack 254 are asked to bring in canned goods to their den meetings. Their Den Leaders will then tally up the number of cans and will give them to the CubMaster. On November 22nd, the CubMaster will add up the number of cans collected during the three weeks of competition and divide the number by the total number of scouts in the den. The den with the highest number of cans per scout will win a pizza party at CiCi's Pizza!!! All canned goods will be presented to Cooperative Christian Ministries before the Thankgiving holiday. While this is a great way to help the community, it may also satisfy an achievement or elective in your handbook. Let's have some fun and see how many cans we can collect for people who need help during the holiday season.
